Slam-dunk Hit!

Offensive Fouls by Jason Long
April 2 – April 25, 2008
Tour to York Region District School Board high schools

A sharply written drama with moments of wonderful humour, Offensive Fouls explored the issue of racism and its many forms through the relationship of an inter-racial teenage couple. While at the centre of the story is a love that is threatened by racism, it provokes further exploration of the issue and its impact on friends and families.

Recognizing the need to ensure Theatre Direct provides access to quality professional theatre for students outside of the downtown core, Artistic Director Lynda Hill selected this work by Calgary based writer Jason Long to mark our first foray back into touring high schools since 1998.

The two hander was performed twice-daily in the round to audiences of no more than 150 students ensuring the intimacy and intensity of the experience was preserved.

The results were incredible as more than 4,000 students from across the York region and GTA were riveted and compelled to engage in post-show dialogues with the performers.

The tour would not have been possible without the support of Mary Lawlis, Curriculum Coordinator for The Arts at York Region District School Board. Many thanks to her for her confidence in our artistic and education vision for this work.

“The play was excellent…What I liked about this play was that it wasn’t preachy in the slightest. It took on the questioning approach, throwing questions that didn’t have a defined right or wrong answer to them at the audience…I want them to be able to go beyond these barriers, become stronger and show everyone that their love for one another can leap through those racial and family disapproval that greets them.”
