Eleanor Albanese | As a child, I grew up in a large family nested in a neighbourhood where families of 10 and 12 children were the rule rather than the exception. The vibrancy of that neighbourhood and our endless hours of imaginative play made a deep and lasting effect on me. In raising my own children, as well as working closely with children over the years, it has been clear to me how complicated and richly layered life can be for a child. In my work as a playwright, I have endeavored to reflect that reality; to offer children some kind of meaningful artistic experience. Children know when something reflects back to them that which is relevant and powerful and beautiful. Yes, the world is drastically different now that what it was when I grew up but some things remain constant- that we all have a need to belong and feel included; that growing up is a bittersweet experience; that diversity brings richness to our lives; and finally, that works of art can and often do deeply effect a child. | |||
