New from Playwrights Canada Press
Acting Out: Scenes and Monologues From Theatre Direct Productions for Youth
Edited by Lynda Hill

Now available from Playwrights Canada Press or through TheatreBooks, 11 St. Thomas Street, Toronto, 416-922-7175, online at www.theatrebooks.com

This collection is a chronicle of Theatre Direct's ever-evolving relationship to young people in Ontario.  One can see, reading from beginning to end, how much has changed in thirty years.  The world has changed, schools have changed, young people have changed... While the issues or subject matter has shifted to reflect the times, what remains constant is a compelling set of themes at the heart of the plays: relationships/intimacy, identity (cultural or sexual), violence or safety from, belonging/family, young people's potential to affect change and the power of creation and imagination in a young person.

From the introduction by Lynda Hill

"English Canada's leading purveyor of theatre for teens and young adults, has received frequent and deserved praise for its willingness to confront its audience with dramas that deal frankly with issues.
-
Toronto Star

"Theatre Direct Canada understands what makes theatre for young audiences work - don't preach, don't teach, don't offer students the latest curriculum fad... Much of the material isn't pretty, but it's real for its chosen audience."
-
Jon Kaplan, Plays International

"Theatre Direct's productions have been some of the most exciting and relevant theatre available for young adults over the last twenty years in Toronto - these honest and direct plays challenge and engage students around the personal and social issues in their lives - it belongs in every drama room!"
-
Sue Daniel, Educator, Toronto Region Co-ordinator, Sears Drama Festival
