The Seedling Festival
Theatre Direct Canada celebrated three decades of award-winning work with the launch of its first annual Seedling Festival in 2007. Designed to invite audiences of teachers and parents, children and teens into the company's tradition of commissioning and developing quality theatre, the festival provides an exciting early glimpse of our future theatrical offerings.
Weekend public readings of new works in progress feature some of the city's most dynamic and innovative playwrights and some acclaimed international guest writers. These public programs are complemented by a series of classroom readings and talk-backs in local schools during the week.
The festival wraps with a 30th birthday Funky Family Dance Party where a live DJ spinning beats promises to help dancers work up an appetite for the yummy munchies provided. For those too shy to dance, members of the company lead arts and gardening activities in our special Seedling children's corner.
Artistic Director Lynda Hill says of the festival:
“The Seedling Festival truly reflects the wide range of approaches and vast artistic and thematic possibilities in theatre for young people.
As artists, we have the joyful and challenging task of interpreting the rapidly changing world through the eyes of a child or teen with theatre that is inspiring, thought provoking and resonant. We are passionate about involving the audience at the development stage of the work, and have found this to be the best way to maintain the integrity of the finished pieces.”
The Seedling Festival promises to be a much-anticipated annual celebration of Theatre Direct's commitment to creating and presenting sophisticated and challenging subject matter. | INFORMATION The 2007 Seedling Festival presented the following workshop productions:
