The Carpet Four award-winning artists of Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany visited Toronto to lead a unique dance/theatre residency with grade 5/6 students of Dovercourt Public School, a dynamic school led by Principal Linda Connetta. Funded by the Ministry of Arts and Sciences of Baden-Wurttemburg, this collaboration with Theatre Direct Canada is a wonderful gift for our company and this emerging and diverse school located at Hallam and Bartlett (near Dufferin). Exploring storytelling through sound, movement/dance, and visual design, led by the award-winning team of designers Katya Bonenfant (France) and Cobi Van Tonder (South Africa), choreographer Hans Werner Klohe (Germany) and dancer Su Mei Jang (Korea), the ensemble of children worked over a three-week period to create a piece that draws on the everyday lives of children and the fantastic landscape of their imagination. A carpet made from found and recycled materials was created with the children, serving as the setting and a path through a forest filled with the images and stories discovered and expressed by the children. Theatre Direct is excited about how the whole school has come behind this undertaking and the enthusiastic commitment of the teachers, parents and young people.
